..::OPIS::..

'Attic are back with their furious third album entitled 'Return Of The Witchfinder'.
The german five piece presents dark and sinister heavy metal with a slight black metal influence - fierce and evil as it can possibly get. '
This album is both back to the roots and also more extreme compared to 'The Invocation' and 'Sanctimonious', vocalist Meister Cagliostro states.'
It's the traditional Attic sound meeting some new and even heavier elements." Follow the Witchfinder's call or burn at the stake!"

German heavy metal occultists Attic are finally back! After two majestic albums, the third in this unholy discography is now due to be released by long-term label Van Records on April 5th.

“The Covenant” begins our journey with haunting orchestral atmospherics. Rather than giving a dull overused beginning, this sets the tone for the ominous but grandiose experience that lies in wait for us. I must admit that I have listened to the lead single “Darkest Rites” quite a few times since the music video was unleashed. The way this cuts right in from that introduction sets the massive feeling of the record in motion. Huge melodies from the guitars with eerily chilling vocals bounce along rhythmic pounding on the drums and bass, firing on all cylinders across the board. Of course the resemblances to King Diamond and Mercyful Fate are redundant but this is more than worship, this is pure sacrilegious ecstasy. Attic write truly spellbinding music with is sonically enchanting and proficiently delivered with a stunning production and terrifying cover to match. The way the drums pop through the mix and the soaring guitars don’t overshadow the rest feels so naturally grand and allows the utterly momentous listen to be truly appreciated from the get-go. Opening with sublime excellence, “Return Of The Witchfinder” is looking to be a truly epic listen.

Between all of the emotive, powerful and vibrant concoctions of darkness there is a reliance on only masterful musicianship and soulfully driven songwriting. Each piece feels like it is coming from the heart and played with inarguable potency. The chilling effect is palpable. Although creepy, blasphemous and secretive, there is a quality to this record that all heavy metal should have; the desire to blast it louder than hell. These galloping 80s melodies barrel into blasting ferocity with seamless transitions, ensuring every second is thrilling and the dynamics never suffer. Tempests of extremity with the warmth of the melodies collide to orgasmically sumptuous sonic effect, showcasing a band whose third offering is another true masterpiece (as are the previous works) that cannot be overstated. Punchy bass gives the bottom end to the dagger-like guitars and the boom of the snare and toms fills out the space between. The spectrum of musicality is full of sheer wonder and the cinematic, theatrical delivery of the vocals ties it all together so gorgeously. The witchfinder’s return is in nothing but greatness.

This is without a doubt Attic’s heaviest record to date. The intensity and delivery are on overdrive. But those classic feelings of cult heavy metal from the prior LP’s are still here in abundance and nothing feels lost or lacking identity. Rather, the natural push forward while keeping both feet planted firmly on their own territory is a healthy one. Taking their consistent strengths and offering us something inspired, new and refreshing with all of the qualities we loved is something all fans of the band are going to appreciate. Equally, new listeners will surely be floored by the luminescent grandeur of “Return Of The Witchfinder” when they find just how much this band has to offer on so many levels. Sonically, aesthetically and musically magnificent, nobody can deny the might of Attic who clearly forge forth with every confidence in the world. Deservedly so. Some moments feel familiar, some totally estranged, but all of them are absolutely marvellous. I cannot cover my excitement about this record, nor do I intend to. The bar and my hopes were set ridiculously high, a damn tough criteria to achieve when I expected so much from this band. Still, they knock it out of the park with a blinding flash. Any song, let alone the entire experience should be evidence enough of why.

Rise! Join this infernal night! Unholy, mystical and sincerely phenomenal heavy metal continues to triumph on Attic’s brilliant new opus. Another enchanting tale of evil and the occult delivered through some of the best music you will feast upon this year. Although the wait has been considerable by modern standards at seven years, there is no denying this was worth every moment and clearly the time was not spent in vain. No, Attic obviously have been distilling the perfect blend of their satanic heavy metal and refining it until it is no less that what we hear here, total dark majesty. Join the coven...

Even though I have been aware of the German heavy metal band Attic and their status as one of the spiritual successors to King Diamond and Mercyful Fate alongside Portrait and Them, I have sadly never had the chance to properly check out the band even though I am a huge fan of both Mercyful Fate and King Diamond. For quite some time, I was so busy with Portrait's discography that I just made a huge mistake by overlooking Attic entirely. However, I am willing to fix that mistake by taking a look at their recently released third full-length album Return of the Witchfinder. The album has been out for some time now, and now with much anticipation and excitement, I have decided to willingly enter the dark age world of Attic, where witches burn and zealots gather, to witness the return of the witchfinder.

From the very get-go, whispers and haunting tales set the mood of the album, in a faithful ghostly fashion, followed by spooky and occult heavy metal that immediately screams out in pure King Diamond/Mercyful Fate style. Heavy banging guitar riffs, superb melodies, spectacular solos, relentless drumming and King Diamond styled vocals of Meister Cagliostro, all dominate throughout the entire album, while leaving open space to include other interesting bits like the surprising blast beats on the tracks "Hailstorm and Tempest" and "Synodus Horrenda", clean guitar sections and horrific organ keyboards. While being completely immersed in the album, you will feel that it has a powerful and fluent progression as it goes from one track to another, with a strong emphasis on the storytelling aspect with concepts that include demons, rituals, witch burning and other occult horror themes. The horror elements contribute a lot to the atmospheric side of Attic's music, creating an aura that will definitely evoke images of these horrific events in your head as you just let yourself go. It's got such a powerful transition between tracks, that once it reaches the conclusion with the final song "Synodus Horrenda", it simply gives you this sense of epic closure where you are satisfied with the journey you just embraced.

The songwriting is undoubtedly dynamic all the way through and each song is filled with plenty of progression, providing a very fun rollercoaster of ideas in this thrillride. With everything this album has to offer, from the music to the stories, as well as the awesome choruses, it is simply impossible to not be engaged from start to finish, especially since the album has such a strong mesmerizing quality to it. These fun inclusions such as blast beats and borderline black metal moments have proven to be incredibly effective by expanding the band's sound and keeping you constantly on edge. Attic is just unmistakable in their game because they just continue being a great successor to Mercyful Fate/King Diamond's style and sound, checking all the marks that this band satisfies the requirements. Whether you prefer Attic over Portrait, or the other way around, you just can't deny that both bands manage to take all the best elements of Mercyful Fate and King Diamond, and then effectively incorporate them in their albums, while both of them still remain in their own unique realm. The cover art by Daniel Valeriani in my opinion perfectly conveys the essence of the album in its pure form, giving this horrific depiction a lot of depth and style that it just captures every bit of Attic's storytelling through music. On the final note, the production of this album is also pretty great and I really like the sound, especially since it's so clean and pristine while still maintaining that level of heaviness in the music.

From what I have come to expect from the Return of The Witchfinder, I have to say that this is indeed a magnificent album that checks all the marks for me. To put it shortly, it's an "all killer no filler" album with lots of great stuff to be found, and not a desperate and lazy rip-off attempt of King Diamond and Mercyful Fate. It is definitely a faithful spiritual successor to both bands, but also a great exemplary album on its own. Attic has without a doubt nailed this one, and I am very pleased with the end result.
